Step 4: Analyze and Share Your Result.
Step 5: Brainstorm Ways To Improve Your Design.

  • Sink of Water
  • Metal Spoon
  • Plastic Spoon
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Plastic Spatula
  • Potatoe
  • Apple
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Can of Soda Pop
  • Egg
  • Rubber Bands
  • Cardboard
  • Drawing Paper & Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Boat Building Supplies (Suggestions: Paper towel Rolls, Soda Can, Chopsticks, Empty Box)
  • Tape Measurer (optional)

Girl Scouts EWNI has put together a great instructional program for Girl Scout Juniors to earn their Paddle Boat Design Challenge Badge virtually.  You’ll learn about different forces of energy and build your own rubber-band powered paddle boat.  The videos below will cover all 5 steps for earning the badge.  Use this slide show to follow along with the video.

Step 1: Explore How Paddle Boats Work (Junior Paddle Boat Design)

First you’ll need to learn about why things float or sink.  Experiment with different household objects and see what sinks and what floats.  Use this Google Form to submit your results (optional.)

Once you’ve completed your experiment; learn more about why some things float and some things sink.  Watch the video below to learn about buoyancy and what makes somethings sink or float.

Learn the meaning of the following Key Words from the video:

  • Density
  • Mass
  • Volume
  • Displacement
  • Force
  • Buoyancy

Now follow along with the video to learn about energy by practicing shooting a rubber band through the air.  Then watch the video below to learn about what energy is, and the difference between potential energy and kinetic energy.  Follow along with the video, using a rubber band and a small piece of cardboard to  experiment with potential and kinetic energy.

Step 2: Design and Build a Rubber Band-Powered Paddle Boat (Junior Paddle Boat Design)

Now that you know how paddle boats work, it’s time to use the engineering design process and build a paddle boat.

Brainstorm about supplies that you can use to build your boat, along with locations that you can test your boat out in.

Now spend a few minutes designing your boat.  Sketch it out on paper.

Now build your boat!

Step 3: Test Your Rubber Band-Powered Paddle Boat (Junior Paddle Boat Design)

You’ve built your boat, now test it out!

Step 4: Analyze and Share Your Result (Junior Paddle Boat Design)

How did your test run go?  It’s time to evaluate your results.  Think about whether or not your boat float, was it able to carry weight, did it go far.

Step 5: Brainstorm Ways To Improve Your Design (Junior Paddle Boat Design)

Is there something you need to fix on your boat, something that needs improving? Now’s the time to redesign and make adjustments to your boat. Continue the designing, testing, evaluating process until your boat meets your goals.

The last step in the design process is to share your results; create a video or take some photos and share it. Describe your design process, the changes you made, along with one thing that can be improved.
