Lemonades and Lemon-Ups – Girl Scout’s Lemon Cookies

With the launch of the 2020 Girl Scout Cookie season, comes a new cookie – Lemon-Ups! Now there are two great lemon Girl Scout Cookies to choose from; Lemonades and Lemon-Ups.

While the cookie packs make look similar, they are two very different cookies.  The lemon cookie sold by your local Girl Scouts will depend on which cookie manufacturer their Girl Scout council partners with; either Little Brownie Bakers® or ABC Bakers®.

Check with your local Girl Scout® to see which Girl Scout Cookies are offered in your area.

ABC Bakers (ABC) makes Lemonades, described as “savory slices of shortbread with a refreshing tangy lemon-flavored icing.”  This fan favorite as been in the cookie lineup for over ten years and has a large social media following.

In 2019, Little Brownie Bakers (LBB) said goodbye to Savannah Smiles®, a “crisp, zesty lemon wedge cookies dusted with powdered sugar.” New for the 2020 cookie season, by LBB are Lemon-Ups, described as “crispy lemon cookies baked with inspiring messages to lift your spirits.”

Packaging – Lemonades and Lemon-Ups

Both Lemonades and Lemon-Ups are packaged in recyclable plastic trays with a film overwrap.

ABC Bakers says this type of cookie packaging saves millions of cartons by ensuring a more sustainable approach to packaging.

Weighing in at 8.5oz, a package of Lemonades® contains 16 cookies and are packaged in a single row plastic tray.

At 6.2oz, a package of Lemon-Ups contains 12 cookies and are packaged in a double row plastic tray.

These lemon cookies have fun designs stamped on top; making for an attractive presentation.

Lemonades have the same intricate lemon design on each cookie.

While Lemon-Ups have one of five different inspiring messages engraved on top; I am bold, I am a risktaker, I am a leader, I am an innovator, I am a go-getter.

Cookie Backs – Lemonades and Lemon-Ups

Similar is size, shape, and design; the first major difference we see between the cookies is on the backside.

Lemonades have a very noticeable yellow lemon flavored icing on their backside.

Lemon-Ups have a very thin, almost clear icing sparsely covering the backs of the cookies.

Flavor – Lemonades and Lemon-Ups

When opening up the packages, you get a very strong lemon smell from both cookies but their lemon tastes couldn’t be more different.

Lemonadesare a buttery shortbread cookie with a tangy tart lemon flavored icing coating the bottom of the cookie.

Lemon-Ups are a mildly lemon flavored butter cookie with a sweet lemon flavored icing coating on a portion of the bottom of the cookie.

Very simply; Lemonades are tangy and Lemon-Ups are sweet.

Nutrition Facts

Cookie for cookies, both Lemonades and Lemon-Ups are similar as far as nutrition goes.

Lemonades, being a slightly larger cookie, have 5 more calories and a bit more fat in comparison to Lemon-Ups.

If sodium is a concern of yours, Lemonades have 37.5mg of sodium per cookie while Lemon-Ups have 50mg per cookie.

Lemonades – Enriched wheat flour (flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), sugar, vegetable oil shortening (palm and palm kernel oils), cornstarch, corn syrup, leavening (sodium acid pyrophosphate, baking soda), salt, natural and artificial flavor, soy lecithin, annatto extract (color), citric acid, malic acid.

Lemon-Ups – Enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, vitamin B1 [thiamin mononitrate], vitamin B2 [riboflavin], folic acid), sugar, soybean and palm oil, contains 2% or less of natural flavors, salt, leavening (baking soda, sodium acid pyrophosphate), annatto extract color, soy lecithin, citric acid, whey protein concentrate, propylene glycol alginate, fructose, malic acid.
